The 1920s and Privileged Society

I actually enjoyed my American Institutions class today.  We talked about the 1920s and how they transformed America.  The invention of plastics, increased use of the Model T Ford, home telephones more than doubled.  America became a consumer, urban nation.  It just seems like a happy, romantic period.  It was a time of change and opportunity.  The top 5% of society controlled more than 33% of the nation's wealth.  As we were talking about the top 5% of society, I happened to be on Facebook looking at pictures of my sorority sisters at a fraternity formal in Aspen, Colorado this past weekend.  Pictures of people walking around the fancy-shmancy condos in robes, well-dressed young adults at a formal dinner and dance, etc.  I finally admitted to myself that, okay, I am a privileged, white kid.  Maybe it also has something to do with the elite of the Manhattan East-Siders in Gossip Girl, too.  I am lucky to be a privileged East-Sider in Salt Lake City.  Not to mention how excited I am to spend next summer in Europe and Africa!

Oh, to be a college student...with privileges.
